Introduce Yourself

Hi guys,
Hoping that i wont be the only person introducing myself in the thread (that would be sad) i will kick it all off with a short Bio on myself.

My name is Cathal, I hail from the stony grey soils of Monaghan in Ireland. I "qualified" (whatever that means nowadays) as a games developer with a focus on programming from LYIT in Donegal Ireland. This was during the recession which meant that the chances for me getting employment in Ireland without experience were slim to none so i moved to Germany in search of Employment. Its there that I got an opportunity to work for e.solutions GmbH (Audi, Porsche, Bentley) as a Technical 3D Artist working on their prototype Virtual cockpit which can be found in their latest generation TT, R8, Q7 and A4.

This was a great opportunity and I enjoyed my 3 years there immensely. The position actually didn't differ too much from that of games development as i did quite a bit of shader authoring, heavy optimizations techniques and clever use of meshes to get the desired effect on a Tegra 3 SOC. It was a challenge but quite fun.

Currently I am in South Africa enjoying the weather and looking for similar employment in games & programming/3DArt. I have always had a love for Valves games and their engines, their tools although something of a pain to use really were for a long time the only modding toolkit available and this grew a unique and passionate community who have created some of the most amazing mods and games I have ever seen. Its why i created sourcemodding, and its why I continue to develop and create for engines that are to be honest quite outdated when compared to the unity's, unreals and cryengines of today.

Sourcemodding is my attempt at preserving the modding legacy of Valves Game Engines. I hope you find the site useful.

Looking forward to meeting you all,

Kind Regards,
Cathal McNally

Howdy Cathal!

My name is Jeff, born and raised in the US and I'm currently living in the state of Oregon.

I've been very close to the Half-Life community for the past 6 years, spending time checking on the steam forums waiting for the next little hint of a new Half-Life game and contributing to the HL fansite - LambdaGeneration.com for 5 years.

I've always had a passion for Valve games and animation so I'm hoping to marry these two passions with my next project. I love that the Valve games are able to draw in people like you, Cathal who are still passionate about the tools and the community to this day.

I look forward to start trickling out information about my project with Source Modding and the Source SDK community beyond.

Hi,

My name is Ben I am from Hungary and I would like to thank you for creating this site. This is a really good idea and If you ever feel like the servers cost too much just contact me. (Email is on my profile) But anyway I am one of the admins/moderators on sourceruns.org and my passion is speedrunning Half-Life 2 Old Engine because its horribly broken and the best thing since sliced bread.

Cheers!

Hi Ben, Welcome. Thanks for your kind words about the site. It is still very much wip but it is getting there :). Thanks very much as well for the offer of monetary aid for server costs :).

I am actually ashamed to say that i knew of your site but it had completely slipped my mind to add you guys to the community page and to the banner below, I will change that post haste πŸ™‚

I just noticed as well that the forum text editor looks like crap so thank you for your post, otherwise it would have gone unnoticed for a while longer.

Kind regards
Cathal

Not much lurking to be done on these forums πŸ˜› They're kinda dead 😐

Irregardless, Welcome πŸ™‚

Heya,

I'm CombatEnforcer, otherwise my real name if you'd want to use it, is Arron.

Even though I don't do it professionally, I specialize with level design, texture map (from diffuse, spec, lum, bump, parralax etc) creation, modelling and 3d animation. Despite the fact thatΒ my experience with content creation for the source engine has been brief compared to the Unreal Engine, I have been a huge Half-Life fan from 1998 and counting. Despite the contrast in engine experience, I have found that many things on different engines, because they lay over the same foundation principals of 3d graphics, are translatable across multiple platforms.

(Some stuff for Unreal which I'm working on + have done)

I am interested in learning various aspects to content creation on Source (particularly HL2 + Episodes 1 & 2)

How's it going? ?

Hi CombatEnforcer, Welcome to the forums. They are not very active mainly due to the relative youth of this site compared to the snarkpit or twhl and because modding for Source has slowed down in the advent of Unity, CryEngine and UE4 etc.

That said you will always get a response from me albeit occasionally a little late assuming that i can help πŸ™‚ Your Unreal levels look quite nice, That is an engine i never got around to playing with really.

The Source Engine index on the site is still quite young compared to the GoldSrc and SFM Sections and honestly I have been shamefully lazy at searching and adding tutorials to the index. I go through phases of inspiration and interest in this project.

Anyway, Welcome. Hope you find the site useful πŸ™‚

Hey FooFighter, thanks for the welcome. πŸ™‚

Keep up the good work with the site and its tutorials, I haven't scanned their entirety yet, but some of them seem quite useful, and its resources like this which are indispensable for modding things Half-Life/Half-Life 2 related and understanding the tech. πŸ™‚
